I work with sculpture, installation and some digital art-forms. I sometimes work collaboratively with other artists, architects, landscape architects, structural engineers, composers, geographers, historians, biologists, dancers and others. I am interested in the potential of ‘shared languages’, underlying concerns that occur within and between different artforms.
My work deals with the aesthetics of scientific representation and artistic representation as part of a broader investigation into how humans apprehend the natural world. Relationships between the computational, the ornamental and the natural (vegetal) are investigated. These relationships may be found in shared structure (formal language) amongst other things.
After establishing myself in Australia and Asia in the 1990s, I moved to London in 2001 and am currently working on commissions and exhibitions internationally. I am Reader in Sculpture at the University of Hertfordshire and a fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts, London. Recent solo exhibitions include Cryptosphere, 2008 at the Royal Geographical Society, London. Awards include arts council grants in Australia and the UK, a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Fellowship in 2000 and a Leverhulme grant in 2007. In 1997 I was Australian representative to the IX Triennial India, New Delhi. I was a Finalist in the National Gallery of Australia’s National Sculpture Prize in 2005 and the 2003 Jerwood Sculpture Prize. Passages, a monograph on my work was published by The University of New South Wales Press, Sydney in 2000.
I have completed several commissions including Ben Chifley, Sydney, Desiring Machine, Melbourne; Cactal, the University of Teesside, UK; Proximities, for the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, 2006 and Flume, a site-specific commission for Ashford, Kent, UK. My work is held in collections including the Art/Omi Foundation, New York, the Jerwood Foundation, London, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra and the Cass Sculpture Foundation, UK
